Fethiye
Fethiye is one of the most popular destinations on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, well known for its turquoise bays, natural beauty and rich history. In ancient times, the area was called Telmessos, and it was an important city of the Lycian civilization. Over the centuries, Fethiye was influenced by major powers such as the Persians, Alexander the Great and the Romans. During the Roman period, the town was also known as Makri (Meğri), meaning “a distant land,” and it continued to develop as a strategic settlement throughout history.
After the Roman Empire was divided, the region remained within the borders of the Byzantine Empire for many years. In the 13th century, it came under the rule of the Menteşe Beylik, and later became part of the Ottoman Empire. Following the establishment of the Turkish Republic, the town officially took the name Fethiye in 1934, in memory of Fethi Bey, one of Turkey’s first pilot martyrs.
